Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS)
Program Description
The Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) Training Program is designed to prepare DODD nurses and direct support professionals to safely and effectively support individuals with developmental disabilities who use VNS therapy for seizure management. This program provides essential knowledge about how the VNS device works, its role in treating epilepsy within the DD population, and the daily responsibilities of staff who assist individuals with implanted VNS devices.
The training emphasizes person-centered, trauma-informed care approaches tailored to individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with communication challenges, sensory sensitivities, and complex medical or behavioral needs. Participants learn how to recognize and document seizure activity, identify changes related to VNS function, and follow DODD standards for reporting and monitoring.
The program also focuses on safe and appropriate magnet use, recognizing signs of complications, and knowing when to seek medical assistance. Staff are trained to collaborate with families, guardians, medical providers, and interdisciplinary support teams to ensure each individual’s health, safety, and quality of life.
-
Over The Counter (OTC) Medication
Program Description
The Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medication Training Program provides DODD nurses and direct support professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to safely administer, monitor, and document the use of OTC medications for individuals with developmental disabilities. This program ensures staff understand the appropriate use of common OTC products, including pain relievers, antacids, cold and allergy medications, topical treatments, and other non-prescription remedies frequently used in DODD-supported settings.
The training emphasizes safe medication practices, proper documentation procedures, adherence to physician orders, and compliance with DODD medication administration rules. Participants learn how to recognize potential side effects, allergic reactions, and interactions between OTC medications and prescribed treatments. Staff are also trained to identify when an OTC medication is appropriate, when additional medical authorization is required, and when symptoms indicate the need for further clinical evaluation.
The program promotes person-centered care by educating staff on how to assess symptoms accurately, communicate effectively with individuals who may have limited verbal abilities, and respect personal preferences and health plans. Collaboration with nurses, guardians, and medical providers is reinforced to ensure safe, consistent, and individualized care.

Epinephrine Auto-Injector
Program Description
The Epinephrine Auto-Injector Training Program prepares DODD nurses and direct support professionals to recognize and respond quickly and safely to life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) using an epinephrine auto-injector. This program provides essential knowledge about anaphylaxis triggers, early signs and symptoms, and the critical importance of rapid intervention to protect the health and safety of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Training emphasizes person-centered support strategies, acknowledging that individuals with developmental disabilities may present symptoms differently or have difficulty communicating distress. Participants learn how to identify behavioral or physical changes that may signal an allergic emergency, when and how to administer an epinephrine auto-injector according to the individual’s health plan, and how to remain calm and supportive throughout the process.
Staff are trained in proper storage, handling, and expiration-date monitoring for epinephrine devices, along with DODD-compliant documentation and reporting requirements following administration. The program also covers emergency response procedures, including contacting 911, notifying nursing staff and guardians, and ensuring ongoing monitoring until medical professionals assume care.
By completing the Epinephrine Auto-Injector Training Program, DODD providers gain the confidence and competence needed to deliver life-saving care in an allergic emergency, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain a safe, supportive environment for individuals with developmental disabilities.
